Pokémon Sapphire Version

Image
I have owned a copy of Pokémon Sapphire on the GBA for years, but I got stuck grinding levels for the same battle both times I started it, and ultimately gave up on it. I still wanted to play through the Hoenn region, though, and with the modernizations of the sixth generation, I was planning to do so via Alpha Sapphire. It took a friend who lives abroad to get me to turn my attention back towards the original release. He's working on completing his Pokédex in FireRed, so I lent him my copy of Ruby and agreed to play through Sapphire so we could exchange version exclusives next time he's in town. It surprised me how quickly I got hooked on the game this time around, despite my poor past experiences and my interest in the remake. In fact, I only meant to play it in bits and prieces, but ended up blowing through the whole thing in about a week! Pokémon Sapphire has all of the expected mainline Pokémon tropes, but I was surprised by how many additional gimmicks were stacked on top...

Animal Well

Image
Animal Well is stunning. I knew from the moment it was revealed that this would be a great game for me, and it delivered. I was a little disappointed at the lack of closure I felt after getting to the second-ending, but I think that's more my fault than anything. Billy Basso made this game to appeal to any level of commitment. You'll find plenty to enjoy whether you want to blast through the main content and move on, or you can't help but explore every nook and cranny uncovering secrets and mysteries. I landed somewhere in-between and had an amazing time with the game, but disappointed that I lost my momentum before seeing the rest of it.  Animal Well puts you in control of an enigmatic little bean and leaves everything else up to you. The game assumes a certain degree of literacy in the medium, with only minimal button-prompts to teach you how to interact with its mechanics. However, if you have the prerequisite experience, this isn't frustrating. In fact, discovering ...

The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures

Image
I was a little worried when starting The Great Ace Attorney: Adventures. I expected to enjoy it, but I had grown so attached to the characters in the mainline series that I was worried about starting with a brand new batch. Thankfully, the game quickly squashed my concerns. The entire cast in this game is excellent and the story blew me away. The third games in each mainline Ace Attorney trilogy have some of my favorites narratives in the whole medium, thanks in no small part to the foundations established by their preceding entries. This is only the first game in a spinoff series, yet I frequently found myself thinking it could rival those incredible titles. Playing as Phoenix Wright's ancestor, Ryunosuke Naruhodo, you'll investigate crimes and defend your clients in court, just like you'd expect from the Ace Attorney series. Taking place close to the turn of the 20th century in both Japan and England, there are some notable differences to both major phases of gameplay com...
