Final Fantasy

Final Fantasy was a fun little game that I started playing for a while on bus rides, but that was all. It wasn't until recently that I decided I should truly delve into the game and see what it had to offer, and I was not disappointed. The first game plays in the traditional RPG style (although it set most of the precedents now known as "traditional"). There is a large overworld and many sub-locations for the player's party to travel to in order to find key items, defeat bosses, and trigger events that will allow for progression through the story. The game revolves around four heroes restoring light to the four elemental crystals/orbs in order to revive the crumbling world in which they live, and such a quest will not be short of challenges!

I played the GBA version over the original NES version because I would have easier access to the sequel that way (same cart and all), and I am glad I did. The interface was gorgeous and everything fit together so nicely, and I definitely wasn't disappointed with the soundtrack. Despite that, the PSP version is regarded as the definitive way to play this game, and if you have the option, do so because it is the most optimized and clean. Otherwise, most other options available will work just fine.

Now to the actual game, the RPG elements felt extremely familiar, with enemies having weaknesses and strengths to different types of attacks, random encounters keeping the player on their toes, and a leveling system to grow the characters. These familiar concepts made it extremely easy to hop right in and enjoy the game. The systems weren't overly complicated, and I never felt like I was too horribly stumped with what to do next that I couldn't continue, but there were points in which I found the difficulty leaped, and it was hard to adjust for a little bit, but otherwise the combat always kept me on my toes in the best way possible. Every time I progressed a bit further, or improved the strength of my party, I felt extremely accomplished, like I was making it somewhere in the game. That feeling of accomplishment is hard for most games to maintain all the way through, but Final Fantasy did it successfully, and with flying colors! With so many options on how to play this game out right now, it is worth at least trying out for a little while, and is definitely an enjoyable ride.
